Starting 9 October 2024, HLB Connect App will be enabled with a security feature that monitors for any potential security threats on your mobile device which could put your mobile and online banking safety at risk. Upon logging in on HLB Connect App, you will see a prompter asking you to allow this security feature on your device. Please click 'Proceed' to continue using HLB Connect App.
This security feature only detects malware activity and security threats to enable us to alert you of the possible risks, as well as take preventive action to safeguard your accounts. It does not collect any personal data from your device or information about the apps that you’ve installed.
In future, our security measures may be enhanced to include restricting access to your banking app when a malware or security threat is detected in your device:
- Apps with known malware and screen-sharing/mirroring/casting features are detected
- When a screen-sharing/mirroring/casting feature is active on your device
If the security feature detects malware or security threats and vulnerabilities stated above in your device, you will be shown a message to notify you that your device is exposed to malware.
To safeguard your bank account, you will need to remove the malicious or risky apps and turn off certain settings in your device which could put your banking security at risk.
Here are some measures to safeguard you against potential malware and security threats.
(i) Screen-recording or screenshot
If you see an error message, it means that screen-recording or a screenshot is taking place on your device. This may put your account(s) at risk as sensitive banking information may be exposed to someone with malicious intent.
To safeguard you, access to HLB Connect App will be restricted or the image will be blacked out.
If you are looking to share or download your transaction receipts, we recommend using our ‘Share’ function. Here’s how:
(a) Immediately after making a payment/transfer:
On the successful screen, tap ‘Receipt’ on the top right of your screen > Choose the channel you wish to share (e.g. Whatsapp)
(b) If you need to reshare:
Tap on ‘Menu’ & ‘Activities’ > Find your payment/transfer, tap on the 3 dots & ‘View Details’ > On your receipt, tap ‘Receipt’ & choose the channel you wish to share
Mobile apps will require certain access permissions from your device.
Certain access is required for some apps to function as intended. For example, access permission to your geo location is needed for a navigation app to function properly. Some apps may ask for additional access permissions which may not be important since they are only used to improve user experience and do not prevent the app from performing its key functions.
Apps downloaded from official app stores will provide you with clear explanations on why certain access permissions are required. Read and understand the explanation carefully before you decide to allow access permissions.
An app that asks for full control of your device or access into sensitive information which it does not need is a red flag. When in doubt, delete suspicious apps.
It’s good practice to regularly review access permissions that you have granted to apps downloaded to your device.
Pay attention to tell-tale signs that your device may be infected with malware.
Device is operating slower than usual
Apps are taking longer to load
Battery drains faster than usual
Device has unfamiliar apps that you do not recognise
Unexplained increase in data usage
Higher phone bills than expected
While these may not be conclusive signs that your device has been infected by malware, you may consider using reputable mobile security software that can help detect, alert you of potential risks and block any harmful apps. Make sure it's also updated regularly.
